The campaign takes place on a city map covered with races and challenges laid out along branching paths. Thankfully, the game’s single-player mode “Hot Wheels City Rumble” is pretty fun and reasonably generous with unlocks. Yup, this is one of those classic games that’d but a lot of fun to play with your friends, but first, you’ve got to unlock everything. You can play all of these modes on any of the game’s 42 tracks, as long as you’ve unlocked them. There are options for split-screen and online multiplayer (neither of which I’ve had a chance to try as of this writing), along with “Time Attack” and “Quick Race” modes. You’ll find all the modes you’d expect to see in the menus for Hot Wheels Unleashed. Hot Wheels Unleashed has a few ways to play Without those sorts of strategies, even the easy difficulty level might be too challenging for some younger gamers who are excited about the Hot Wheels brand.

It didn’t take terribly long for me to figure out how to strategically use my break to drift into curves, build up boost, then hit it to rocket out of the turn. I tried out easy mode to see how different it would be, and the AI is slower and less aggressive, but your car still rockets around the track. I’ve played a fair amount of arcade-style racing games in my time, so I started this on the standard, middle difficulty level and found myself actually losing races a lot at first. Like, it’s “you better let off the gas and tap the brake through this curve if you don’t want to go flying off the course” fast.

It’s also extremely fast for a game that I expected to be geared towards children. When I think of a licensed racing game I expect wacky sound effects and power-ups, but outside of the ability to drift and boost, the driving in this game is very straightforward.

Hot Wheels Unleashed doesn’t rely on gimmicks in its gameplay. Hot Wheels Unleashed is an extremely fast and punishing arcade racer that has more in common with F-Zero than any game with “Kart” in the title. When I first saw Hot Wheels Unleashed, I figured it’d be an awesome, kid-friendly racing game that I could goof off with now, then let him play in a year or two alongside Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I grew up with Hot Wheels my whole childhood, and have been having a lot of fun lately introducing my son to them. For example, the Sandy Cheeks vehicle has everything from the spacesuit dome to the squirrel tale to the flower.Geek to Geek Media was provided with a review copy of this title. One of the best parts of these cars, unlike with the previous one, is that you can tell who these characters are supposed to be right out the gate. The season pass gets you the vehicle based off the character Sandy Cheeks right out the gate. That being said though, I am REALLY impressed with the creative design that went into these new Spongebob vehicles, and that’s coming from someone who’s only experience with the franchise is via memes. I bought the last battle pass only to never get the majority of the vehicles I wanted as the XP you earn is itsy bitsy.

Now, I like Hot Wheels Unleashed a lot, I won’t lie, I’ve gotten a lot of fun out of it, but a battle pass in a game that one has to pay full price for is kind of obnoxious. Instead of getting the cars for the price of the battle pass, you have to earn them within a certain amount of time. This season, like the Super-Villain season before works like your traditional battle pass. Knock on lead.īut now Hot Wheels is going from leaping tall buildings in a single bound to a pineapple under the sea with the new SpongeBob Squarepants season.

Little annoyed Lex Luthor didn’t get a nod but maybe they’re gonna do a specific Superman one. And recently Hot Wheels had even added a slew of DC Comics-themed items with both the Batman Expansion that gave us Batmobiles, a Wonder Woman vehicle, a Robin vehicle, and the amazing Penguin vehicle complete with umbrella, AND the Super Villain season which gave players the ability to unlock vehicles based off famous DC baddies like Deathstroke, Poison Ivy, Cheetah, Black Manta, and, of course, Harley Quinn.
